The Artistic Motivations Behind the Pieces from: John Isaac Rivers

Since September of 2016, John Isaac Rivers has been passionately creating mixed media collages and painting art pieces. His artistic journey reignited from the themes he explored in the 1960s, particularly a major painting titled "Galaxy" in 1965, inspired by his fascination with the formation of the universe. This cosmic theme has been a consistent thread in his work since 2016.

About His Work

John’s recent art has been heavily influenced by images from the Hubble Telescope and a broader curiosity about the universe. He coined the term "Cosmicscapes" to describe his works, which reflect cosmic objects and phenomena. To him, “Cosmicscape” is the conceptual opposite of “Landscape.” His approach combines abstract expressionism with bold, vivid color schemes and mixed media textures that echo the chaotic beauty of the cosmos.

Motivation

At the heart of John's art is his interpretation of the "BIG BANG" — not just as a scientific event, but as an imaginative, artistic explosion. He portrays what that moment might have looked like at a microscopic level if humans could have observed it. The visual tension in his work, along with torn materials, layered textures, and bold juxtapositions, creates an intense visual experience that mirrors this monumental cosmic phenomenon.

Core Artistic Themes

John's creative philosophy embraces explosive color, visual randomness, and illusional depth. Inspired by both scientific phenomena and the abstract expressionist movement, his works integrate cardboard, paper, markers, metal, and acrylic into layered compositions. These "snapshots" aim to capture the ever-expanding energy of the universe, referencing black holes, gravity, nebulas, supernovas, and beyond. To John, this body of work is an imaginative journey through the origins and evolution of everything we know.
